medicina fluminensis 2016, Vol. 52, No. 1, p. 49-54 49 Abstract. free-living amoebae are present in the nature, feeding mainly with bacteria, fungi, and algae. Some microorganisms have evolved different mechanisms to resist the digestion by amoebae and they are called “amoeba-resistant microorganisms”. Some of the important human bacterial pathogens belong to this category including Cryptococcus neoformans, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycobacterium avium, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella spp., and Francisella tularensis. Francisella and Legionella are gram negative facultative intracellular bacteria. Although the diseases they cause are completely different, they share some of the unique features in intracellular lifestyle within amoeba cells.

Identification of Conserved ABC Importers Necessary for Intracellular Survival of Legionella pneumophila in Multiple Hosts
It is established that the human pathogen Legionella pneumophila becomes significantly augmented for infection of macrophages after intracellular growth in amoebae when compared to like-strains cultivated in laboratory media. Based on this observation, we reasoned that the most critical virulence determinants of L.p. are expressed by responding to stimuli generated by the protozoan host specifi...
متن کاملMicroorganisms resistant to free-living amoebae.
Free-living amoebae feed on bacteria, fungi, and algae. However, some microorganisms have evolved to become resistant to these protists. These amoeba-resistant microorganisms include established pathogens, such as Cryptococcus neoformans, Legionella spp., Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycobacterium avium, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Francisella tularensis, and emerging patho...
متن کاملF. novicida-Infected A. castellanii Does Not Enhance Bacterial Virulence in Mice
Francisella tularensis is a facultative intracellular bacterium that causes tularemia in humans and animals. Epidemiology of tularemia worldwide is often associated with water-borne transmission, which includes mosquitoes and amoebae as the potential host reservoirs of the bacteria in water environment. In vitro studies showed intracellular replication of F. tularensis within Acanthamoeba caste...
متن کاملThe Divergent Intracellular Lifestyle of Francisella tularensis in Evolutionarily Distinct Host Cells
Francisella tularensis is a gram-negative, facultative, intracellular bacterium that survives in mammals, arthropods, and amoebae; however, macrophages are considered the key cells in pathogenesis of tularemia in mammals. Understanding intracellular trafficking of F. tularensis within various host cells is indispensable to our understanding of bacterial ecology, intracellular adaptation to vari...
متن کاملGetting “Inside” Type I IFNs: Type I IFNs in Intracellular Bacterial Infections
Type I interferons represent a unique and complex group of cytokines, serving many purposes during innate and adaptive immunity. Discovered in the context of viral infections, type I IFNs are now known to have myriad effects in infectious and autoimmune disease settings. Type I IFN signaling during bacterial infections is dependent on many factors including whether the infecting bacterium is in...
